Driving Instructor

How much can a driving instructor earn?

If you believe the adverts, it's easy to earn £30,000 a year. However you won't find many instructors earning that kind of sum. On average, most full-time instructors earn in the region of £18,000 to £25,000 a year. However, in times of recession there are many instructors who cannot earn those figures.

In recent years the number of instructors has grown while the number of 17 year olds has decreased - and that trend is likely to continue. So it's likely that times will get harder for ADI's.

The average price for driving lessons is £22 per hour. An instructor who teaches 30 hours per week (equivalent to around 35 hours work), for 47 weeks a year (allowing for public holidays and annual leave) will net around £31,000.

Red Driving School's franchise (including car, insurance etc) is £9,000 and fuel (not included in the franchise) will add an extra £2,000.

So these figures would give you around £19,000pa before tax, National Insurance and any other miscellaneous expenses.
